Spirit levels, also known as bubble levels, are tools used to determine if a surface is horizontal (level) or vertical (plumb). Here is a detailed introduction.

Structure

A typical spirit level consists of a sealed glass tube filled with a liquid, usually alcohol or mineral spirits, with a small air bubble inside. The glass tube is mounted in a frame, which can be made of metal, plastic, or wood. The tube has graduated markings on its surface, which help to indicate the degree of inclination of the surface on which the spirit level is placed.

Working principle

The air bubble in the liquid will always rise to the highest point. When the spirit level is placed on a perfectly horizontal or vertical surface, the bubble will be centered between the graduated markings. If the surface is not level or plumb, the bubble will move to one side of the center, indicating the direction and degree of the inclination.

Applications

Spirit levels are widely used in various fields. In construction and carpentry, they are used to ensure that walls, floors, and ceilings are level and vertical during the building process. In machinery installation, they help to install equipment accurately to ensure its normal operation. In addition, they are also used in some DIY projects and home improvement tasks to ensure the accuracy of the work.
